I don’t know about anyone else but I was keen to watch ‘The Devil Wears Primark’ on Channel 4, which was due to screen on Sunday 1st June at 9pm. However the programme was pulled at the very last minute and little is known why. The programme, presented by Alexa Chung, uncovers what conditions are really like in the Indian factories that supply the UK’s leading budget clothes retailer, Primark. Through undercover filming and interviews with factory workers, she investigates Primark’s claims to enforce an ethical code of conduct. She also sets up her own simulated sweatshop, staffed by 15 budget fashion-loving volunteers. Here at Piccalilly we were keen to see whether Channel 4 had come up with a better version than the BBC’s Blood, Sweat & T-Shirts. Besides we have it on good authority that Alexa is a big fan of Fairtrade. We’ve been informed that someone has set up a petition to persuade C4 to broadcast the programme, which clearly shows that people are increasingly interested in these issues.
